When the ribbon is pressed under the thumb and dragged across the
blade of the scissors, the side of the ribbon that is farther from
the blade becomes stretched because of the sharp angle around the
blade. Because one side of the ribbon becomes a bit longer than the
other, the ribbon tends to curl in a direction that puts the longer
side on the outside of the curl and the shorter side inside.
